On May 16, 2024, the ESA’s GNSS Science Support Centre (GSSC) proudly hosted a highly informative webinar as part of its GSSC Now series. The webinar, delivered by Miquel García from ROKUBUN, focused on the advancements and applications stemming from the AMIC Project. This event attracted a diverse audience of professionals and enthusiasts in the fields of geospatial science and satellite navigation.

The AMIC Project, funded by ESA, is dedicated to the deployment of affordable GNSS receivers in remote and hard-to-reach areas. These receivers, specifically Rokubun’s MEDEA GNSS model, are meant to complement existing networks such as the International GNSS Service (IGS) and the European Reference Frame (EUREF). The data collected by these receivers is meticulously stored and managed by ESA GSSC, providing a valuable resource for ongoing research and monitoring efforts.

Central to the webinar were a series of Jupyter notebooks developed under the AMIC Project framework. These notebooks facilitate the processing of GNSS raw measurements, including pseudoranges and carrier phase observables, to assess and monitor ionospheric conditions. A key focus was on the Rate of Total Electron Content Index (ROTI), an important metric for evaluating ionospheric scintillation, which can significantly impact GNSS signal accuracy.

Miquel García’s presentation not only highlighted the technical capabilities and applications of the MEDEA GNSS receivers but also demonstrated the practical use of the Jupyter notebooks in processing real-world data. Attendees were given a comprehensive overview of how these tools can be employed to enhance the understanding and monitoring of ionospheric activities, particularly in regions where traditional data collection methods face challenges.

The webinar underscored the collaborative efforts between ROKUBUN and ESA GSSC, showcasing the potential of innovative technology in expanding the reach and efficacy of GNSS networks. The successful completion of this event marks a significant milestone in the ongoing mission to improve global navigation satellite systems and their applications in scientific research.
