‘Ruta 179’ from Spanish TV Telemadrid visited ESAC

The Spanish TV channel Telemadrid, visited the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) to learn about the activities of this centre of the European Space Agency (ESA) in Madrid.

During the visit, Telemadrid’s team was able to see first-hand the advanced technologies used in the Galileo Science Support Centre (GSSC) facilities and its data exploitation platform, GSSC NOW.

The GSSC team, part of ESA’s Navigation Science Office, uses satellite navigation data for scientific research. Like treasure hunters, they analyse the navigation signals and their changes as they pass through the ionosphere and troposphere. By characterising the atmosphere through this method, the team gains insights into the behaviours of the sun, oceans, and global warming. This approach enables the team to better understand atmospheric conditions and their effects on our planet.

To facilitate access to a wide variety of GNSS resources, the GSSC team developed GSSC NOW data exploitation platform. The platform allows users to access a large number of GNSS resources from satellites and on-ground receivers for a wide variety of applications. In addition to data discovery and download, the platform provides high-performance computing capabilities, allowing GNSS data fusion and the deployment of Machine Learning (ML) processors.

Designed to be intuitive and user-friendly, the platform is organized in a way that enables users to quickly locate the information they require. Furthermore, the platform is highly scalable and flexible, meaning that it can handle vast amounts of data and can be accessed from various devices, including mobile phones, tablets, and computers, at any time and from any location.

Moreover, GSSC offers educational services to help users maximize their utilization of GNSS resources. These services comprise advice and training on using the platform and support in integrating platform data into users’ existing systems. The team is also involved in participation and organization of colloquiums like the Galileo Science Colloquium to enhance users’ learning and collaboration opportunities.

Telemadrid’s visit to GSSC NOW evidences the public interest in science and technology.
